French Dual Language

Bienvenue!

The program was initiated by Francophone parents who wanted their children to learn in their native language and Anglophone parents who wanted their children to acquire a second language.

At PS 133, these parents found a supportive learning community led by Principal Heather Foster-Mann, who welcomed parent and community participation to build a Dual-Language Program (DLP) that will enrich children of all backgrounds.

The first DLP class began in 2011 with one kindergarten class. The following year, we expanded to two kindergarten classes in French and also began our first Spanish Dual-Language Program class. As these classes move up all the way to 5th grade, the Dual-Language Programs grows with them. Today the French DLP spans from Kindergarten to 5th grade, and the Spanish DLP from Pre-K to 5th grade.

Why French?

French is spoken throughout the world. One of the official languages of the United Nations, it is also an official language in 29 countries spanning the globe, including nations in Europe, North America, Asia, Africa, and the Caribbean. The Francophone world is rich in diversity, and children who participate in the Dual-Language Program at PS 133 may find themselves equally capable of communicating with peers in countries as diverse as Canada, Belgium, Haiti, Vietnam, and Rwanda.

Structure

Anglophone and Francophone children learn both their primary and a secondary language in an immersion environment. Following a 50/50 model, 50% of the students are Anglophone and 50% Francophone, and half the daily instruction for students will be in French and the other half in English.
