Literacy – EL Education K–5 Language Arts Curriculum

The EL Education Language Arts curriculum is a full, research‑based program that helps students grow as readers, writers, speakers, and thinkers. It spans kindergarten through fifth grade and uses high‑quality, diverse texts to build strong literacy skills. Students learn through real‑world topics that connect to science, social studies, and the arts, helping them build knowledge across subjects while improving their reading and writing.

A major focus of the curriculum is equity, student voice, and deep thinking. Each unit is designed to spark curiosity and encourage students to think critically about complex ideas. Students practice close reading, gather evidence from texts, and complete research projects that lead to meaningful final products, such as presentations, essays, or creative work that shows their understanding.

The curriculum also emphasizes collaboration. Students participate in structured discussions, group work, and reflection routines that help them develop communication skills and social‑emotional awareness. Because the curriculum is aligned with college‑ and career‑ready standards, it supports students in building a strong foundation for future academic success and responsible citizenship.

Math

Envision Math is our main mathematics program. It uses a hands‑on, problem‑solving approach that helps students understand how math applies to everyday life. Lessons often include visual models, real‑world scenarios, and interactive activities that encourage students to think through problems rather than memorize steps.

Envision also provides strong digital support. Students can access online videos, practice problems, and interactive tools that reinforce classroom learning. These resources help students review concepts at home and build confidence in their math skills.

Science

Students learn science both in their classrooms and in our dedicated school science labs. Our approach encourages students to explore the natural world, ask questions, and learn through hands‑on experiments. Teachers introduce scientific concepts through observation, investigation, and inquiry‑based activities that help students understand how science works in real life.

A unique part of our program is the Garden of Wonder, created in 2011. In this outdoor learning space, students plant, care for, harvest, and taste edible plants. This experience helps them understand plant biology, ecosystems, and sustainability while also developing an appreciation for urban gardening. The garden also supports cross‑curricular learning by connecting science with literacy, math, and environmental awareness.

Social Studies

Students begin social studies by learning about themselves, their families, and their neighborhood. As they move through the grades, their studies expand to include local communities, the United States, and cultures around the world. This gradual widening of perspective helps students understand how people, places, and events are connected.

All social studies lessons are integrated with the English Language Arts curriculum. Students read informational texts, write about historical events, and participate in discussions that build both content knowledge and literacy skills. Projects often include research, map work, and presentations that help students develop a deeper understanding of the world.

Enrichment

At PS 133, we believe in educating the whole child. Students from Pre‑K through 5th grade participate in at least one enrichment class each day. These classes include Physical Education, Drama, Technology, Music, Science, Spanish, and Art, giving students opportunities to explore their interests and develop new skills.

In addition to daily enrichment, students take part in special residency programs throughout the year. These residencies offer deeper experiences in areas such as puppetry, choir, movement and music, theater, swimming, and coding. These programs help students build creativity, confidence, teamwork, and problem‑solving skills.
